Starving Yogi Eats Light?

AHMEDABAD, India — An 83-year-old Indian holy man who says he has
spent seven decades without food or water has astounded a team of
military doctors who studied him during a two-week observation period.

Prahlad
Jani spent a fortnight in a hospital in the western India state of
Gujarat under constant surveillance from a team of 30 medics equipped
with cameras and closed circuit television.

During the period, he
neither ate nor drank and did not go to the toilet.

“We still do
not know how he survives,” neurologist Sudhir Shah told reporters after
the end of the experiment. “It is still a mystery what kind of phenomenon
this is.”

The long-haired and bearded yogi was sealed in a
hospital in the city of Ahmedabad in a study initiated by India’s
Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the state defence
and military research institute.

The DRDO hopes that the findings,
set to be released in greater detail in several months, could help
soldiers survive without food and drink, assist astronauts or even save
the lives of people trapped in natural disasters.

“(Jani’s) only
contact with any kind of fluid was during gargling and bathing
periodically during the period,” G. Ilavazahagan, director of India’s
Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), said in a
statement.

Jani has since returned to his village near Ambaji in
northern Gujarat where he will resume his routine of yoga and
meditation. He says that he was blessed by a goddess at a young age,
which gave him special powers.

During the 15-day observation,
which ended on Thursday, the doctors took scans of Jani’s organs, brain,
and blood vessels, as well as doing tests on his heart, lungs and
memory capacity.

“The reports were all in the pre-determined
safety range through the observation period,” Shah told reporters at a
press conference last week.

Other results from DNA analysis,
molecular biological studies and tests on his hormones, enzymes, energy
metabolism and genes will take months to come through.

“If Jani
does not derive energy from food and water, he must be doing that from
energy sources around him, sunlight being one,” said Shah.

“As
medical practitioners we cannot shut our eyes to possibilities, to a
source of energy other than calories.”

Google Continues Push for Global Information Domination

10 May

via Engadget

“Well, it looks like Google will be kicking off its forthcoming Google Editions
e-book service on a high note — Japan Today is reporting that
the company has managed to score the backing of “almost all” publishers
in the United States. That apparently brings the total number of
publishers and authors on board to over 25,000, and the total number of
books set to be available to somewhere in the neighborhood of two
million — or over four million if you include the public domain books
that Google already makes available for free. As far as we can tell,
however, Google itself still isn’t saying any more on the matter
publicly than it did last
week
, when it confirmed that the service would be launching in late
June or July.”

I should probably write out all of my thoughts about Google and their desire to openly control all global public information. I would like to juxtapose this with my thoughts on Apple and their similar desire for global domintion, which would definitely not be open source. Hmmmmm… my inspiration to do these sorts of things comes in waves, so until the next time my philosophy of technology mindstate reveals itself again, jsut enjoy the music videos I’ve been posting.
Go watch and listen.
Now.
Or else I will come and find you and maybe ask if you’d like to share a cup of tea.
Thank you, come again.

UK Pavilion at 2010 Shanghai Expo

7 May

via NAXMIX

“Developed by one of the UK’s leading creative talents, Thomas Heatherwick, the
centrepiece of the UK pavilion is a six storey high object formed from
some 60,000 slender transparent rods, which extend from the structure
and quiver in the breeze. During the day, each of the 7.5m long rods act
like fibre-optic filaments, drawing on daylight to illuminate the
interior, thereby creating a contemplative awe-inspiring space. At
night, light sources at the interior end of each rod allow the whole
structure to glow. The pavilion sits on a
landscape looking like paper that once wrapped the building and that now
lies unfolded on the site.”

Gulf Oil Spill

3 May

The oil spill in the Gulf has the potential to become an “unprecedented catastrophe,” according to President Obama. At this point, it is certain to become the worst oil disaster the United States has ever seen. The Exxon Valdez spill in 1989 released 11 Million gallons of oil into the ocean. This disaster, which is not a spill but rather an underwater geyser, will surpass 11 million gallons within the week. It is gushing at 200,000 gallons per day. The toll this will take on our earth will be terrible. The loss of life and destruction of ecosystems will take a toll for many years to come. So sad.
